If you are a power wheelchair user, should you have a back up wheelchair?

Power wheelchair users should have a manual chair as a back up.  In the event that a power wheelchair breaks down, it can be difficult to get a loaner wheelchair in a timely fashion. And loaner wheelchairs don’t always fit the wheelchair user well. They are not custom to the user, so they can set the person up for short muscles, faulty posture, skin break down, etc.

You also need to be prepared just in case your wheelchair van breaks down. A very common plan B is to have a manual wheelchair you can travel with.  If a wheelchair van breaks down, it can take a long time to get repaired, and rental wheelchair vans are not always available.

In both scenarios, having a manual wheelchair is a game changer, and something you might rely on for several weeks if you need it.

A back up wheelchair could be a tilt in space wheelchair, or an ultra lightweight manual wheelchair. Need help figuring out which one would be right for you? Book a discovery call, and let’s problem solve through it together!!!
